Packet Digital: Innovation Soars with New Markets Tax Credit

Aug 21, 2024

From the U.S. Marine Corps to the Pentagon, Packet Digital is a key innovator in smart batteries and power systems for cutting-edge Unmanned Aircraft Systems around the world. One of the key aspects of this mission? Taking their capabilities to the next level with the New Markets Tax Credit program.

Groundbreaking Beginnings

Packet Digital’s journey began in 2003 with the engineering of military radio computer chips for the U.S. Marine Corps. In 2014, the Marines were looking to enhance the longevity, sustainability, and operational capabilities of their drone fleet during missions, and turned to Packet Digital for help. Expanding their efforts, Packet Digital ventured into the realm of battery manufacturing and management systems.

Packet Digital’s solutions extended drone flight times from 90 minutes to 15-18 hours, capturing the attention of the Pentagon’s Operational Energy Office. This led to partnerships with commercial giants like Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Air Force.

“We prioritize understanding our customers’ needs and delivering the world’s highest combination of power and energy density for drone batteries.” – Terri Zimmerman, CEO of Packet Digital

Launching into Expansion

In 2022, Packet Digital secured a significant contract with the U.S. Navy, which initiated the production of circuit boards and led to their expansion into a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Fargo, North Dakota.

To help with expansion costs, Packet Digital secured a New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) allocation through Dakota Business Lending under the advisory of Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC. Within just 6 months, their $11.2M allocation was approved and Packet Digital surged forward with their expansion.

Blazing New Trails

Packet Digital now supplies advanced drone technology to the Navy, offering real-time tracking of current, voltage, and temperature for their drone fleet.

Additionally, Packet Digital created management software that notifies military personnel of potential issues and provides guidance on battery usage and lifespan. Packet Digital’s high-performing smart batteries accommodate high discharge rates for takeoff and landing, ensuring optimal performance, with batteries lasting over 1,000 cycles…that’s ten times longer than those they replace!

“Our batteries keep pilots informed about the power remaining for landing, and our system allows users to operate their battery down to the margin…maximizing flight time and capabilities.” -Terri Zimmerman, CEO of Packet Digital

Powering the Future

Packet Digital’s growth isn’t just technological…it’s about nurturing talent and fostering community both within their organization and beyond. The NMTC program was created to empower business owners to support local causes through the “Pay it Forward” initiative. As a result, Packet Digital donated $50,000 to North Dakota State University’s Engineering program to help build future leaders.

What’s Next?

As Packet Digital shapes the future of autonomous technologies through investments and partnerships, their leadership in smart batteries and power systems sets new standards for efficiency, reliability, and performance. These advancements have driven nationwide innovation and will continue to transform the industry.
